Bulletin: June 2021
Some good news at last. After so much uncertainty over the past months as to what we could do and what we could not do, it does finally look as if normality (or as close to it as possible) will be returning very shortly. Of course, given the somewhat unpredictable nature of the virus that has disrupted so much for all of us, we must nonetheless attach a caveat to this announcement.
With particular regard to training courses, we cannot yet confirm when the permitted substitution of remote tuition for personal attendance will be revoked or even if it is, whether it will be a simple return to the previous requirement or whether a degree of remote tuition will continue to be allowed. We shall, of course, keep training providers fully briefed as and when.
However, here is some good news that cannot be rescinded:

GHR Practitioner and Trainer, Sheila Granger, Wins Prestigious National Award
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) transcript reads:
A hypnotherapist from Hull has been named Self-Employed / Sole Trader of the Year in the UK final of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) high-profile ‘Celebrating Small Business Awards’, hosted by TV presenter Clare Balding.
Sheila Granger, author of two books – including the Amazon best-seller ‘No More Diets! Believe In A Healthier, Better You’ – became a clinical hypnotherapist in 2009 and has gone on to build her business and reputation worldwide from her Humberside base.
Having already won the Yorkshire regional final of the awards, she beat off competition from across the country to take the top prize at the UK final, held virtually, on May 27 this year.
FSB Celebrating Small Business Awards is the most high-profile event of its kind nationally, with more than 3,000 entries, and showcases the best of small business entrepreneurship in every part of the UK.
The final included a video message from the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, who hailed small businesses and the self-employed as “the vital, blood-pumping heart of our communities – creating jobs, supporting skills and opportunity, and helping out your customers”.
Sheila Granger said:
“It is a real honour to receive this high-profile national award from FSB, and I am very proud of the business I have built and the many people across the world who have been helped and supported. I am focussed on making hypnotherapy mainstream by equipping other practitioners globally with the skills to build their own practices, and look forward to developing my business further over the coming years.”
FSB National Chairman Mike Cherry said:
“It is wonderful to see how Sheila has built and developed her business; pioneering new techniques and sharing her insights with others internationally.
“Small businesses and the self-employed are the drivers of innovation and growth, and I wish Sheila every success in taking her business from strength to strength.”
Sheila says of the award:
“I’m hoping that given the effects the pandemic has had on many hypnotherapy practitioners and their businesses that by sharing this it inspires others to what is possible.
Often, we can seemingly battle to be seen as viable/credible compared to other businesses out there, but over the past 12 years I’ve attempted to consistently educate and spread the word of the benefits of hypnotherapy and have been lucky enough to run a full-time practice as the result of it.
It felt like a win not just for me, but for our hypnotherapy profession too.
The GHR says:
This is excellent news and a brilliant (but most deserving) achievement for Sheila personally. It is also great news for the wider field of hypnotherapy as it clearly demonstrates that our profession is being recognised at the highest level as a serious complementary aid to mainstream healthcare. It also provides a significant step towards hypnotherapy eventually being fully integrated into the overall patient care system.

Train in PTSD / Trauma Recovery AND Support Covid Relief Programmes in India –
“An opportunity to learn from a legendary clinician-researcher summarising 50 years of experience in the field of PTSD & Trauma”
Mark Davis, Senior GHR Practitioner and Principal of the UK College of Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy (UKCHH) has announced that the UKCHH and Dr Donald Meichenbaum PhD have partnered to raise funds for the India Covid-19 Relief efforts (with the charity, SewaUK) by hosting a special workshop on PTSD, Trauma and Resilience. He explains:
Dr Donald Meichenbaum (see https://www.goodtherapy.org/famous-psychologists/donald-meichenbaum.html) is one of the founders of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; he developed the first treatment manual for PTSD and was rated “one of the 10 most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century” by the ‘American Psychologist’.
You can either buy a ticket to participate – and all fees are donated – OR you can simply donate (if you do not wish to attend).
Event date: Friday July 16th
N.B. No need to worry if that doesn’t suit you because the workshop is available on 30-day replay.
This is a double win:
- A) You receive training to work with PTSD and Co-Arising Disorders from a true world expert.
Don Meichenbaum, with Ellis and Beck, “put the C into CBT” and developed the first treatment manual for PTSD, and which is still used today; he is a true legend in the field.
The workshop is incredibly helpful for all therapists; you do not have to know, use or even especially like the CBT model because Donald Meichenbaum is teaching a transtheoretical approach that works particularly well for hypnotherapists; fundamentally it is about helping clients tell a new a story.
He particularly focuses on CORE TASKS that cut across all therapies and how to attend to those.
He has been a clinician and academic for over 50 years, with a particular focus on stress, coping, trauma and resilience.
- B) Raise money for Covid Relief programmes in India.
The charity, Sewa International, are the highest rated charity on Charity Navigator. Their Covid Relief covers public health awareness, emergency equipment, poverty support and mental health support.

New Business Advice Platform Launched
A new business advice platform, Trade Secrets Community, encourages hypnotherapists to collaborate with industry peers to help survive the pandemic.
This free platform is the brainchild of Paul Peace and Karen Bartle (well-known practitioners, trainers and supervisors in hypnotherapy) and provides a unique online space to exchange business advice, tips, ask questions, and provide support on what works in our industry. They state:
“In our experience, the hypnotherapy community has always done well in supporting each other with both clinical work and business practices. Indeed, we have been training new therapists in our home towns and beyond since 2008 both in the UK and Australia, helping them as much as possible with their marketing and business practices.”
Karen and Paul are dedicated to helping business owners get through the pandemic by enabling them to pursue goals in collaboration with their peers that otherwise would be difficult to pursue trying to do it alone. Right now, many business owners are looking for business advice, ideas, support and creativity from people who understand their industry well and who are managing to survive despite these challenging times.

The European Congress for Integrative Medicine (Previously Postponed) – New dates: 5-7 November 2021
The GHR & GHSC are working with the European Congress for Integrative Medicine (ECIM) to promote its essential task in bringing together medical practitioners, healthcare professionals, scientists, researchers, therapists and health politicians from around the world.
The Congress has been taking place at various European cities since 2008 and at this forthcoming event the ECIM Committee of experts is including GHR Practitioners, GHSC Affiliated Training Providers and Students in training within an invitation to submit abstracts for consideration for presentation at Europe’s cutting-edge integrative medicine event to be held for the first time in the UK. Accordingly, the ECIM state the following:
“Although as a result of the continued COVID-19 pandemic, this 13th European Congress has had to be postponed from its previous publicised date until this coming November, the decision to move the dates of the congress comes with the full support of the congress presidents. The move has also been received well by committee members, supporting organisations and exhibitors with many thinking that the congress could be one of the first events in the international calendar where the global community will be able to come together in-person.
Indeed, the congress organisers have seen a great deal of enthusiasm for the event with more than 370 abstracts received to date, plus a number of international organisations who are looking to co-locate their workshops or meetings alongside.
There is also an increased sense of confidence from many clinical professionals and research scientists who recognise, perhaps now more than ever, the importance of promoting an integrative approach to healthcare. With this in mind, the organisers are confident that the congress will be even bigger and better than initially anticipated.
This long-awaited congress will enable like-minded individuals to come together to celebrate the contribution that integrative medicine has on healthcare and to rigorously discuss the strong evidence and research that is helping to take this movement forward.
We hope that you will reserve the date in your diary and very much look forward to welcoming you in London in November 2021.”
To register, visit: https://www.ecimcongress.com/register
To view / submit abstract topics, visit: https://www.ecimcongress.com/submit_abstract (Deadline; 2nd April 2021).
N.B. All successful abstracts submitted in the specified format (outlined on the submission form), will be published in the European Journal of Integrative Medicine. (See https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/european-journal-of-integrative-medicine).
